INTERVIEWS: Christina Ricci on Anything Else

Christina Ricci stars as free-spirited Amanda in Woody Allen's new romantic comedy, Anything Else. Jason Biggs plays Jerry Falk, an aspiring writer, who falls in love at first sight with Amanda. But he soon finds that being in love with the unpredictable Amanda isn't like anything else at all. "She's very much like a typical Woody Allen girl, very neurotic, very insecure, very self-absorbed, almost like infantile in her emotions," Ricci says about her character. She explains how she played someone so neurotic. "It's mostly on the page, like all the ways that they manifest themselves are on the page. You might feel like a little bit of something and just to make it register, especially in something that's very comedic, you just make it larger than life."

In the film, Amanda has some infidelity problems, but Riccie doesn't believe the character actually thinks she did it for Jerry. "No, I don't think she really believes that, I think she's just scrambling for any excuse that he might buy. I think maybe that's why some of her contemptuous actions come from the contempt she has for someone who actually buys that."

While Amanda is really out there, Ricci says that Biggs' character isn't perfect either. "Amanda is ridiculous and the overtly screwed up one, but he's cheating on his girlfriend in the beginning. So it's sort of like he got paid back a little bit. He's cheating on his girlfriend in the beginning, he seems very apathetic towards both of them. It's not like he's really upset when she leaves. He's sort of upset, but he doesn't seem to really care that much. There's a detachment to his character."

Working with writer/director Woody Allen is an experience, she says. "I think Woody is just uncomfortable sometimes in new situations. Certainly, I'm really shy, like he was actually always asking me why I was so quiet. I was just like 'I don't really know you. So, I'll talk later.' I think that he's sort of the same way, which is probably why he talked to me a lot and talked to Jason as well because we were both very professional, there to do our jobs. We joke around a little, but especially if we're nervous about something. If we were both nervous with Woody, then we were just sort of quiet and respectful. That's probably why he spoke to us more than I hear he speaks to other people. I don't know, we had fun. He joked around with us, he teased us, stuff like that. He's very blunt with criticisms, and at first you sort of, you know, you're a little taken aback by it, but then towards the end I kinda learned to give it back a little bit. So it was fine."

She didn't change what Woody Allen had planned much. "I'm not comfortable with changing the words. I generally don't do that and he's such an amazing writer that it seems not to make any sense to do that. Also, it's a very particular vocabulary he uses and just the way all of his characters speak, and even the pronunciation he uses are uniformly different in all his films. Like I would say 'nye-ilism,' Woody Allen actors say 'nih-ilism.' It's just like all those things you don't change because they all go with his style. I mean, we ad-libbed a little bit. He wanted no dead air and everything should be moving all the time. If something happens you make something up to cover it, stuff like that."

Christina Ricci is making her directorial debut with The Speed Queen, about a woman on death row who wants to set the record straight about her criminal past. "I'm attached to direct. We had our financing but our financing fell through so we have to go other places for financing." She would also star in the lead role.

Meanwhile, she co-produced Prozac Nation, based on the best-selling novel. Set in the mid-1980's before the prevalence of anti-depressants, it follows a young working class woman's (Ricci) bout with depression during her first year at Harvard. The film explores this generation's struggle to navigate the effects of divorce, drugs, sex, and an overbearing mother. The film's release date has been moved around many times, but Miramax is believed to be targeting an April release now. "I of course want it to come out, and I feel confident that it will, it�s just a question of the right time," she adds.

Ricci also stars with Charlize Theron in the crime drama Monster. Based on the true story, Theron plays Aileen Wuornos, a highway prostitute who was executed in Florida for killing seven men during the 1980s. Christina plays her girlfriend, Selby Wall. "No one knows if she was aware of what was going on or not, if she's really na�ve and not very bright," she says about Wall, "Or if she's actually incredibly intelligent and just knew how to manipulate this woman and everything else around her. That's one of the things I loved about that character. She's completely ambiguous."

She gets to lock lips with Theron in the film, which is already a much-talked about topic. "She was a very good kisser. At first, we were so uncomfortable and nervous, kinda like what the hell are we doing, and we couldn't stop giggling, Charlize and I. Everyone was prepared for us, you know, everyone was quiet and it was like a closed-off monitor and everything, and she and I just couldn't stop laughing and making really lewd jokes."

But what you'll get to see on the big screen is not all fun and games. "I think people are gonna be a little horrified when they actually see what we look like in the movie. It's not hot, it's not necessarily hot lesbian action. We look like as close to those girls as we could. Charlize put on 30 pounds and she has prosthetics on her face and fake teeth and contacts, and they like bleached her skin out, and she's dressed kind of like the highway hooker looking, but not the hot hooker, it's like white trash early 80s hooker, really poor. And then I have this weird boys haircut and big boy clothes. I was actually the most comfortable I've ever been in my entire life. I actually liked it. I had lots of boys clothes. It was pretty good. I wore no makeup whatsoever. There's no glamour involved."

John Woo Scouting Canada for Land of Destiny

Director John Woo (Windtalkers) is said to be looking again at the Calgary area as the principal backdrop for his period drama Land of Destiny.

"We had thought we'd be filming exclusively in Los Angeles, but I just got a new script that makes me want to look at Calgary again," Woo tells the Calgary Sun from the Vancouver set of Paycheck, the sci-fi thriller he's shooting with Ben Affleck.

"...What has impressed me even more is the excitement the Alberta Film Commission has in wanting us to film in the (province). They have sent me some incredible location shots. It definitely makes me want to come and see them for myself. We told them we were hoping to begin filming in February and would need a lot of snow. They assured me, that's one thing they could deliver."

"Destiny" is set in America in 1860 during the building of the railway. It focuses on a group of Chinese labourers and their Irish counterparts who have been brought to American expressly to build the railway.

"It is not a western, but an epic drama hopefully filled with warmth and powerful emotions," says Woo.

Woo has been developing this picture for Chow Yun-Fat and Nicolas Cage is still attached, but Cage won't be able to get to Calgary until the fall.

Zellweger Gaining Weight for Bridget Jones

Renee Zellweger says that she's been putting on weight for the Bridget Jones's Diary sequel. "It's really just math. I've been eating lots of really fattening food. I read that I'd been eating doughnuts, but they're not really my thing," she said.

Zellweger said she's been working with a nutritionist who's been feeding her healthy food with hidden fat. Breakfast includes four slices of toast and cream cheese. "That's just the first course," Zellweger added. "It's a four-course breakfast. I don't really think about it because I'm usually doing something else."

Zellweger said she still exercises, but "if you are talking about running in Hyde Park, I'm not going to be doing that." Asked how she would lose the weight, she repeated "just by doing the math."

The sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, is scheduled for release next year.

The Coming Soon! Box Office Report has been updated with the studio estimates for this weekend. Stay tuned there for the final figures on Monday afternoon.

In a weekend when the second "Tomb Raider" was expected to top the box office, Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over took everyone by surprise landing in first place with $32.5 million from 3,344 theaters. The $38 million-budgeted sequel averaged $9,718 per theater.

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl remained in second place with another $22.4 million in its third weekend to push its impressive total to $176.1 million.

Coming in very close in third was Sony's Bad Boys II which added $22 million in its sophomore frame for a total of $88.5 million so far.

Paramount's Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life instead came in at number four with $21.8 million from 3,222 theaters. Probably a lot below what the studio was expecting to debut with for the $95 million film.

Rounding out the top five was Universal's Seabiscuit which earned a strong $21.5 million from only 1,989 theaters for the best per-theater-average in the top 12 of $10,820. Look for the Tobey Maguire drama to stick around a while.

Also of note is Disney and Pixar's Finding Nemo. The animated feature earned $3.9 million this weekend to push its total to $312.7 million. It is now about $16 million away from passing up Disney's own The Lion King ($328.5 million) to become the biggest animated feature of all time.

This weekend marks the first time in history that five movies made over $20 million!

Screen Daily says that The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is already on its way to doing big biz in Japan.

Japanese distributor Nippon Herald Films has sold a record number of advanced tickets to The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King - even though it does not open in Japan until Spring 2004.

13,645 advanced tickets were sold on August 2 in nine key cities for the third part of Peter Jackson's trilogy. This broke the one-day record sales in nine key cities previously set by Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets with 11,220 tickets.

The high number of ticket sales is largely attributed to a Nippon Herald publicity campaign which saw the company offer 1,000 fans who bought a ticket on August 2 to meet Elijah Wood at a private party in Tokyo sometime next year.

Summary:
Great music from Phil Collins and a couple of familiar moose make Brother Bear an animated film worth checking out with the whole family.

Story:
Kenai, Denahi, and Sitka are three Native American brothers living in the Great North at a time when mammoths still lived. Eager to prove himself a man, Kenai is hot headed, immature, impatient, and irresponsible. When a bear steals some fish he left out, Kenai impulsively chases after the bear to kill it. However, when Kenai finds himself outmatched by the bear, it�s up to his brothers to save him. Unfortunately, Denahi is killed in the process.

Now thirsty for revenge, Kenai again sets out to kill the bear against his surviving brother�s wishes. When he does kill the animal, something strange happens. The spirit of his older brother magically turns Kenai into a bear. Now seeing the world from new eyes, Kenai must travel through the wilderness to a magical mountain to be turned human again. However, to do so he must get help from the very bears he hates.

A small cub named Koda latches on to Kenai and they begin their journey, but things take a turn for the worse when Sitka begins chasing them, believing that the bear (now Kenai) has killed his other brother.

Brother Bear is rated G.

What Worked:
Though computers have been dominating animated films these days, Brother Bear shows that there�s still a place for hand drawn animation. The northern wilderness scenes are absolutely beautiful. The backgrounds are stunning pieces of artwork that really set the tone for the movie and they capture the majesty of the setting. I�m not sure computers could have captured the looks as well as these paintings.

Phil Collins returns to Disney after his wonderful work on Tarzan. I thought his work on Tarzan was extraordinary and I think he�s done an excellent job on Brother Bear as well. I think the music from Tarzan was a bit better, but I guarantee you�ll find yourself humming tunes from Brother Bear days after you�ve seen the film. The opening song featuring Tina Turner entitled Great Spirits is one of the best of the movie. I love Tina, but I�m not sure her voice is best suited for the song. However, she still does a fine job. On My Way is also a toe tapper while the song from the credits is one you can probably expect to hear on the pop radio stations (I can�t remember it�s title at the moment).

The entire voice cast handles their jobs well, but it�s the two moose that really stand out. In a bit of no-brainer casting, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas play the Canadian moose Rutt and Tuke. They provide much of the comic relief of the film. While they seem to improvise a bit, they never really cut loose like you hope they would. Still, I can�t think of anyone better to play these characters.

Other background characters in the film provide a lot of great gags. Two rams butting heads and yelling at echoes offer some laughs. A couple of chipmunks having a disagreement provide some of the first chuckles of the story. The film wraps up with a blooper reel during the credits and if you stay to the very end of the movie, you�ll see a funny joke about the fish from the film.

Brother Bear has a lot going for it, but I think you�ll find the music and the moose the two things you�ll walk away remembering.

What Didn�t Work:
Unfortunately, Brother Bear�s story is pretty much by the numbers. You can see most of what�s going to happen from a mile away. About the only surprise in the film is the ending. It�s not quite what I expected, but if you think about the Disney merchandising machine, you can probably figure out what happens.

The film also didn�t ever have me laughing out loud. As much as I love Moranis and Thomas, most of their antics only left me with a few chuckles. And besides them and the cute little bear, most of the other characters in the film weren�t memorable.

The film also starts out with a smaller picture. When Kenai is turned into a bear, it suddenly expands to fill the full screen. It�s so subtle that I didn�t notice it till halfway through the film. However, it didn�t add much effect to the story either. I realize what the creators were trying to do, but I didn�t think it worked.

The Bottom Line:
Overall, kids will enjoy the animation, adults will enjoy the music, and Brother Bear ends up being a great film to take the family to. It�s definitely worth checking out.

When Sophie de Rakoff Carbonell designed the costumes for MGM Pictures� Legally Blonde, she had no idea what a huge hit the film would be. But upon its release, Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) and her colorful wardrobe stole the hearts of summer filmgoers, and the original Legally Blonde became one of the sleeper surprises of the year. When it came time to make the sequel, there was no question the filmmakers would bring Carbonell back to design and style Elle for her new adventures in Washington, D.C. With a new locale and storyline � but the same signature color � Carbonell worked closely with Witherspoon to update Elle Woods� closet and bring a fresh style to the nation�s capital.

�We�re coming back to Elle Woods a few years later,� says Carbonell. �She�s still the same person, but she�s more adult and has a professional job � she�s older, more sophisticated.� But even though her style has evolved, Elle is as colorful and individual as ever. �She�s definitely in her own element wherever she is,� says Carbonell.

In coming up with design concepts, Carbonell says, �Because it was more based in Washington, we took Jackie O. as our starting point and went from there � tweeds and sixties-looking Chanel and pieces like that for when she�s at work in Congressional offices.� In other parts of the film, there�s �a seventies grassroots activist look.� Though the Legally Blonde 2 costumes are quite distinctive and original, Carbonell did gain inspiration from different time periods and famous fashion statements. �A lot of the outfits have nicknames,� Carbonell continues. �There�s the Gloria Steinem outfit, the revolutionary outfit � references to more political and social figures.�

One of the reasons Reese Witherspoon is so effective as Elle Woods is that she knows the character inside and out. Witherspoon was an invaluable help in keeping the character and her clothing �distinctly Elle.� Carbonell says, �Reese is very aware of the character. She personally wouldn�t wear many of the outfits, but she knows Elle would wear them.� It�s comedy, so together they made sure to keep the costumes as fun and colorful as possible, but they always remained true to Elle.

While Carbonell created many of Elle�s new looks from scratch, several of the world�s top fashion designers helped Carbonell complete Elle�s outfits, from fabulous hats to colorful purses and around 50 incredible pairs of Jimmy Choo shoes and boots. Versace, Nanette Lepore, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino, Tocca, Louis Vuitton, Hogan, Anya Hindmarch, H. Stern, Mikimoto, Oscar de la Renta, Chloe, Juicy Couture, Miss Sixty, Emmanuel Ungaro, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, and William B. are just some of the designers and labels whose clothing, jewelry, and accessories are seen on Elle in the movie.

Hair and makeup are also integral parts of a character�s overall look. Witherspoon and Carbonell collaborated with hairstylist Anne Morgan and makeup artist Brad Wilder to complete the total Elle package. It was a team effort, and everyone involved is incredibly pleased with the results.

Audiences loved Elle Woods, but they also went crazy for her beloved Chihuahua, Bruiser, played by canine actor Moonie. Bruiser�s role is expanded in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde and he�s even more integral to the story. This gave Carbonell a chance to expand Bruiser�s wardrobe as well. Outfit for outfit, Bruiser�s duds give Elle�s a run for their money.

�People loved the dog in the original,� says Carbonell, �and they loved that the dog had clothes. We went into that a lot more with Legally Blonde 2. We were able to match up a lot of Moonie�s wardrobe with Reese�s outfits, specifically designing them so they would compliment each other.� Dog-clothing line Fifi & Romeo and the line�s creator, Yana Syrkin, collaborated with Carbonell on Bruiser�s many looks.

SOPHIE de RAKOFF CARBONELL (Costume Designer) returns to design the costumes for Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde after helping to bring Elle Woods to life with the costumes for the original Legally Blonde. She recently worked with Reese Witherspoon again designing costumes for last fall�s comedy hit Sweet Home Alabama. Carbonell�s other film credits include All About the Benjamins starring Ice Cube, Wayne Wang�s The Center of the World, Crime + Punishment in Suburbia, Saturn, and Four Dogs Playing Poker.

Carbonell�s other credits include music videos for Alanis Morissette, Candle Box, REM, Rod Stewart, Robyn, Ben Folds Five, Whitney Houston, Wyclef Jean, Meshell Ndegeocello and Enrique Iglesias. Before her foray into costume design, she was West Coast Editor of Paper magazine.
